Analyze yourself as a mother and teach kids how to analyze the data from media
According to my view,social media is like a double edge sword. At one edge ,It is connecting people and a open window to share ideas, opportunities,innovation and etc.But what is the other edge?.Yes,A 65 year old woman who was misunderstood as a child kidnapper and she was beaten to death by a group of villagers in Thiruvannamalai,tamil nadu on May 9th,2018.Whats app video of chid kidnapping created this misunderstanding among the villages to beat the old woman.
Technology,mass communication,cine media,social media are good to have at one edge but in the same time we should be aware about their other edge too.While thinking about this other edge of media ,I have remembered one Tamil Thirukkural ( ancient Indian treatise on the ethics and morality of the commoner -wikipedia) "From whomsoever one hears about a thing, it is wisdom to understand the true import of it."
In this modern world, people are hastier in taking decisions.So it is very necessary to know how our brain works or how brain is biased while taking decision.Our brain is taking short period decision according to 3 bias.
1.Confirmation Bias
When you think one person is not honest,then you might ignore all his honest actions.That means you will see that person in the eye of unhonest only.The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.” ― Robertson Davies, Tempest-Tost (canadian novelist)
In Thiruvannamalai incident,people watched the old woman in the eye of kidnapper rather than she is a old woman,she might be a passenger,she might like kids,she might kind with small kids.2.Hindsight Bias
This is the bias in the basis of past experience.When I prepare for the second subject exam,I have predicted that second subject question will be easy as like first subject question.That means I am not not having a clear picture about 2nd subject question,but I am predicting in the basis of my past experience of first subject question.
In Thiruvannamalai incident,people predicted about the old woman according to their past experience of whats app video.
3.Representative Bias
This is the bias in the basis of our belief.One time I saw a lady with white Saree ,so I thought she is a nurse in a hospital.But she is a college girl and she is going for a cultural performance of peace.My belief is nurse wears white saree.So I have biased according to my belief.In thiruvannamalai incident,Unknowing person giving chocolate made people to think about the lady is a kidnapper.Because There is a belief,"kidnapper gives sweets to kids to kidnap them'.So according to their belief,people has taken decision.
As a parent ,As a teacher, as a social care taker,as a Indian citizen I am seeing this thiruvannamalai incident is not only a incident but a lesson too.Nowadays technology and media are part of our life.We can not ignore completely.As a parent we should teach our kids how to analyze data what they receive and how much necessary taking time to think and analyze before taking decision.As I mentioned in my last post of intelligence ,When we over use crystallize intelligence (just memorizing lesson) ,it reduce the our fluid intelligence (thinking practically).Learning new subject,new things are important to develop their knowledge but more important is how they are applying in their life.In this data crowded world ,we should teach them how to evaluate the data they receive from one to one communication to mass communication.
